Ski Trip

When and where does it take place?

  • Cotting School’s annual ski trip typically takes place over four days during the first week of February, leaving Tuesday and returning Friday.
  • On the first day of the trip, selected staff and students leave Cotting campus and travel to Mount Sunapee to get outfitted with their skis and boots, etc., and check into their hotel for the evening.
  • The second day, they arrive early for a full day of skiing with volunteers from the New England Healing Sports Association (NEHSA). We have been partnering with NEHSA for our annual ski trip for over 20 years!
  • On the third day of the ski trip, the group builds on skills they’ve learned and continues to ski all day long.
  • On the fourth and final day, we check out of our hotel, gather up any last odds and ends, and travel back to Cotting campus so everyone can relax and recharge over the weekend.

Who can go on the ski trip?

  • The ski trip is limited to 16 students each year. We give priority to graduating seniors and first-timers, followed by post-grads. Since space is limited, there is often a waiting list. However, space permitting, we will gladly invite Upper School students who are 18 years old.
  • Eligible students will receive an invitation/application in the fall and will be notified in December if they have been accepted to attend this year’s ski trip. We do ask families to contribute to the cost of the trip, but no student will be denied access because of financial or medical constraints.
  • In terms of staffing, we provide one chaperone for every two students. There will also always be two Cotting School nurses accompanying the group. Additional staff and faculty may travel up to Sunapee for the day to support our full-time chaperones and ski with the students.

Other things to know:

  • Students share a hotel room with a roommate of the same gender, unless they require overnight support from a parent or chaperone.
  • The hotel has a swimming pool, which most students have the opportunity to enjoy at least one evening of the trip.
  • Breakfast takes place at the hotel each morning.
  • Cotting provides bag lunches made to students’ specifications each day at the ski lodge on the mountain. Students are not permitted to buy their own lunches.
  • Students may take a break from skiing to grab a hot cocoa in the lodge at their own expense, if staffing permits.
  • On the second evening of the trip, we host a banquet with the NEHSA volunteers at a local restaurant. All other dinners will be catered at the hotel.
  • On the last day of skiing, NEHSA volunteers honor all of our students at an award ceremony.
