Noreen Virginia Murphy, 67, died July 4 of colon cancer at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Fla. Born in Boston, Ms. Murphy received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music. She later earned a master’s degree in education from Boston College. Ms. Murphy was recognized for her ability to play a trumpet and use it as a tool to reach others. She often played with various school orchestras and bands and performed taps at Cohasset Cemetery on Memorial Day. For 40 years, Ms. Murphy worked as supervisor of music and theater for the Cotting School, a school for the disabled in Lexington. She retired five years ago to attend to her mother in Lakeland. Her mother, Marilyn, said she loved folk music and teaching music to her nieces and nephews. Services have been held.
