Educators, Professionals, and Parents Gather for All Things Tech Conference at Cotting School

On Saturday, November 14, nearly 200 educators, parents, and professionals from 79 different cities and towns in and around Massachusetts gathered at Cotting School for the 3nd annual “Making Things Possible” conference.  This year’s theme entitled “All Things Tech” included 22 unique workshops relating to technology in special education. Workshops were presented by external partners and by Cotting School faculty members.

Sara Young, an Upper School student at Cotting School, and her mother Amy, kicked-off the day with an insightful keynote address. The dynamic mother and daughter duo shared their personal experiences using high-tech and low-tech tools and tricks in everyday settings to help Sara access everything from schoolwork and homework. to her Facebook account or her bathroom at home. “I felt like a close friend of the family when I heard from Sara and her mom” said one conference attendee who was a public school teacher attending the conference to learn more about how to support students in her special needs classroom.

The day went on to include informative workshops and presentations all focused on the theme of technology, and presenting a variety of evidence based, practical strategies. One participant said, “This conference helped me get familiar with technology, services and equipment that I did not know existed.” During the lunch hour a group of ten people toured HOPEhouse, Cotting’s five-day boarding program for students ages 17-22.

In addition to hands-on sessions and discussions throughout the day, the Cotting School gymnasium was transformed into a vendor and resource area for over 30 exhibitors.  Vendors’ exhibits and resources provided the opportunity for conversation, exchange and support.

We are thankful to everyone who made the day possible, including Pine Street Inn’s iCater for providing a delicious lunch.  Finally, thank you to the generous Burr Family for making this a conference that is free and accessible.
