In honor of National Adoption Month, Boston Celtics and MSPCC presented foster and adoptive parent Sue Dwyer from Littleton, Mass., with the Heroes Among Us Award at the team’s home game on November 17, 2010. Ms. Dwyer, a single parent, was recognized for her ‘unique humanitarian spirit and exceptional contributions to the community.’ For the last 28 years, Ms. Dwyer has devoted her life to serving as a foster and adoptive parent for children with special needs or complex medical issues.

With the help of MSPCC, a 132-year-old non-profit organization that strives to strengthen families and prevent child abuse through services and public advocacy, Ms. Dwyer has adopted six children fostered in her home and has guardianship of a seventh. Ms. Dwyer’s children thrive in her home by being provided with possibilities, enjoyment and love.

Ms. Dwyer’s teenage daughters, Julissa and Kate, attend Cotting School, where they play on the basketball team. The girls truly enjoy playing and watching the game. Julissa and Kate are Celtics fans and the night of the ceremony was their first time attending a Celtics game.

“National Adoption Month is a time to celebrate families like the Dwyers and raise awareness about the adoption of children currently in foster care,” says MSPCC President and CEO Marylou Sudders. “Sue Dwyer gave them a family and a permanent, nurturing home. MSPCC is honored to have helped the Dwyers and we are grateful for the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation’s generous support over the years.”
