Transition Classroom

The transition classroom is one of the eight upper school classrooms at Cotting School. It serves students in their last 1-2 years of school. A focus of this classroom is assisting students in developing skills that will prepare them for life after Cotting.

Students apply the academic skills they have acquired to real life settings. They work on time management, money skills, career awareness, budgeting and scheduling. Transition students learn how to do household tasks such as laundry, recycling, pet care, plant care, vacuuming and light yard work.

Teachers, classroom assistants, therapists and other services providers support students in applying their academic skills and reaching their maximum level of independence.

Students work in the community two days a week in a variety of different work experiences. They also make their own lunch once a week. In preparation, they plan the menu and create a grocery list for items needed. One day a week students participate in a community trip to various places such as museums, supermarkets, restaurants, and retail shopping for items needed in the classroom. Students also have an opportunity to explore adult programs through community trips and discussions.
