In
the 2005-2006 school year, we want to share the fine
work that is done at Cotting School with key decision
makers in Massachusetts. As the first step in that
process the Cotting School Government Affairs
Committee was recently formed.
The goal of the committee is to
insure that quality services are provided to all children
with special needs. It is our hope that the group will
educate members of the Massachusetts Legislature and
policy leaders about the unique needs of children at
Cotting School and at other schools serving children
with special needs as well as advocate for improved
services and adequate funding. We can envision the
group having three specific tasks which include: sharing
legislative alerts via e-mail with staff and parents,
attending events at the state house or governmental
agencies that advocate for children with special needs
and hosting legislative events at our school. We have
a first step in mind.
In our discussions at the Parent Advisory Council and the Cotting Family Community
we discussed holding an event at Cotting School in the fall called “Invite Your
Legislator to School Day.” At this event Cotting Students would each invite their
local state senator and state representative to their classroom to “experience”
our school. This would be followed by breakfast and an information session. Teachers
could tie this event to helping our students learn more about the role of state
government.
We are continuing to recruit new members and hope that
you will consider joining. We are seeking interested
parents and staff members who would like to volunteer
their time and talents and join our newly formed Government
Affairs Committee.
If you are
interested in joining this group, please contact Pam
Varrin at x130 or pvarrin@cotting.org.
Thank you for your interest.
