Remembering Dr. John Chaves, alumnus, trustee, advisor, and friend.

Dr. John Chaves died this weekend at his home in Tucson, Arizona after a long illness. John was an alumnus of Cotting School and for many years was the president of the Cotting School Alumni Association. Since 1990, John served as a member of the Cotting School Board of Trustees.
John made a lifelong commitment to Cotting School beginning as a student from 1947 to 1959. He graduated from Boston University and earned a Ph.D. at Northeastern University. In exchange for his dissertation, NASA paid his educational expenses. John held professorships at the University of Southern Illinois and SUNY Stony Brook. During his illustrious academic career, he authored more than 75 books, journal articles, and professional reviews.
No school has ever had a better champion than John Chaves. He was committed to ensuring that our students received quality educational and therapeutic services. His insights and wisdom were valued by generations of Cotting School educators, administrators and trustees.
By unanimous vote at the 2007 Annual Meeting of the Cotting School, the trustees voted: That Cotting School hereby establishes the John Chaves Graduation Award. This award is given in thanksgiving for John’s leadership and commitment to Cotting School as a student, alumni leader and trustee. The recipient of this annual award will be a graduating senior at Cotting School who, like John, is a role model for others and plans to continue his or her education.
